Vitamin E was first discovered in 1922 and it consists of two classes known as tocopherol and tocotrienols. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble nutrient.

What Vitamin E Good For?

The main function of Vitamin E is as an antioxidant that prevents free radical reactions that happen in our body. Free-radical is well known as the cancer-causing agent. Thus, Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that repairs the cell that has been damaged. On the other hand, Vitamin E becomes a booster to our immune system. It fights against bacteria and viral infections and also interacts with each other to carry out other important roles.

Who Should Take Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is one of the micronutrients intake taken among all Malaysians regardless of age. According to recent Malaysia’s Recommended Nutrient Intake (2017), Vitamin E intake is adopted from WHO/FAO (2004) by which each level of age has its own recommended value

Why It Is Important To Consume Natural Vitamin E But Not Synthetic Supplements?

Vitamin E is easily get from natural food and is also fortified. But be sure that the source of food is not a synthetic one. What does synthetic Vitamin E means? It means Vitamin that is laboratory-made and it does not come from natural sources. Hearing that, there must be some negative points of this synthetic vitamin E.

For example, Vitamin E that commonly comes from natural sources is listed as ”d-alpha-tocopherol” on food packaging. On the other hand, the synthetic one is listed as  ”dl-alpha-tocopherol.”.  The natural form is more potent. The equation is like this.

1 mg vitamin E = 1 mg d-alpha-tocopherol (natural vitamin E) = 2 mg dl-alpha-tocopherol (synthetic vitamin E).

It means that doubled amount of synthetic Vitamin E is needed to consider it as 1mg of Vitamin E.

Some countries still use the international unit(IU) and this also implies it. 1 IU of the natural form of vitamin E is equal to 0.67 mg whereas 1 IU of the synthetic form of vitamin E is equal to 0.45 mg.

Where To Find The Natural Source of It?
