R&D Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY 

The R&D Specialist participates in all functions of research and development including, but not limited to, formulation development, raw material evaluation, technical troubleshooting, packaging testing, and employee training to meet company standards for product quality, production efficiency, and profitability by performing these duties in a timely manner. This position works in all areas of Abrand Food’s manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders), mixes (powders), equipment, and packaging. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

Researches and develops working formulations for all forms sold by Abrand Food including powders, powder beverages and foods according to Abrand Food manufacturing capabilities. Formulation requirements include new, existing, and products needing improvement with work being performed in Pilot Plant, Processing, and Packaging areas as well as liaising with our external laboratory.


Supports manufacturing by providing technical troubleshooting in all situations where corrective action is required to increase efficiencies, rectifies production deviations, resolves quality problems, and works out production difficulties. Supporting manufacturing includes working hands on in processing rooms, packaging lines and direct contact with raw materials, equipment, and packaging. 


Works directly with Purchasing, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control by evaluating new ingredients, ingredients out of specification, and alternate vendor ingredients to ensure materials will run on manufacturing equipment. 

Evaluates, tests, and approves new and/or alternate vendor packaging components to minimize or eliminate potential problems with manufacturing, distribution, product integrity, product quality, and assigned shelf life. The valuation of new and/or alternate vendor packaging components is limited to relation of packaging components and physical properties of material which is going to be packed. 
Organizes resources in completing projects based on the priorities of meeting profitability objectives, company deadlines, operating budget responsibilities, and research and development departmental goals. 


Obtains information related to research and development including raw material characteristics, processing techniques, environmental conditions, packaging requirements and production efficiencies to be used for Bill of Material entries and specifications. 


Inputs information into systems in the form of bill of materials, specifications, and manufacturing instructions. 


Participates in New Product Development and Products Needing Improvement committees as needed to communicate project updates and discuss technical information. 


Identifies and documents critical parameters pertaining to approved formulas in order reproduce results on a full-scale production basis. 


Completes and evaluates product documentation packages for final review by appropriate managers. 


Communicates formula requirements and offers assistance to other departments including manufacturing, purchasing, receiving, order fulfillment, quality assurance, quality control, marketing, sales, engineering and accounting. 


Helps evaluate equipment and processes used in the development, evaluation, and production of products at Abrand Food. Implements changes as needed to maximize efficiency, efficacy and accuracy of new product introductions and existing products. 


Reviews manufacturing processes, determining where improvements could be implemented in terms of product quality to contribute towards the success of the company. This includes work performed in all manufacturing areas within the plant including blending, processing, packaging, and warehouse. 
Complies with safety and GMP requirements. 

He/She will be responsible for developing and implementing quality and food safety systems to ensure operational compliance to internal and external regulations. As an R&D and Production based resource, this position requires working closely with manufacturing, supply chain, global quality & food safety functions and regulatory affairs to identify opportunities to improve product quality, systems and safety. 

Develop a strategic plan for food safety and product quality (from raw materials to finished food products, including in-store handling and disposition of finished products).

Lead & direct all regulatory activities related to food safety and quality (HACCP, USDA, GMP, SQF, Animal Well fare…). Responsible for HACCP

Lead plant microbiology testing program and reporting

Provide technical expertise for internal standards regarding microbiological, physical, nutritional, and sensorial attributes of ingredients and products.

Participate in Risk Assessment studies for all new ingredients, raw materials, equipment and processes.

Improve/maintain technical specifications systems related to food safety.

Verify and release new ingredients & recipes (physical, microbiological, sensory, nutrition) in compliance with products and processes specifications.

Maintain recipes database system. Verify and approve new recipe accuracy and compliance prior to implementation.

Analyze food safety and quality data and prepare reports (incl. consumer feedback and complaints, ingredients, finished products, products & processes specifications).

Direct and manage suppliers’ food safety and quality practices (facilitate site of co-manufacturers and vendors for compliance). Ensure that all processes related documentation and programs are managed and maintained.

Provide quality and food safety systems training to colleagues.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related field; or Bachelor of Science in Food Science or Bachelor of Science in Food Technology or related field and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English/Malay with zero or minimal grammar mistakes. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. 
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

REASONING ABILITY 

Excellent problem solving skills required and strong task organization/prioritization skills.Readiness in joining the team by giving full force in efforts without trying attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to handle testing equipment, raw materials and finished product, tools, or controls and communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee frequently is required to taste or smell and ascend and/or descend stairs. The employee is occasionally required to move from place to place within the facility, to reach, ascend and/or descend, balance, or stoop. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus and color vision.
